Bike & Build is a nonprofit organization that benefits affordable housing and empowers young adults to pursue civic service through its service-oriented cross-country cycling trips. As one of four trip leaders on Bike & Build's Central United States route, I:(1) Worked with churches, community centers, campgrounds, and fitness centers to secure donated food, showers, and places for us to sleep and store our equipment;(2) Arranged days for my team to volunteer on build sites with various affordable housing organizations;(3) Used online resources, previous years' notes, and knowledge from local bike shops across the country to design the safest possible routes between towns;(4) Worked with a quarter of my 36-person team to ensure they met their various requirements for joining the trip, including training 500+ miles, fundraising at least $4,800, volunteering for 10+ hours on a build site, and participating in the Bike & Build-curated affordable housing curriculum;(5) Completed those same rider requirements, including fundraising over $7,500;(6) Managed all riders and logistics during the 10-week cross-country cycling trip, inclusive of 12 volunteer days with affordable housing organizations;(7) Managed the team's support vehicles and finances; and(8) Biked 3 of every 4 days on the route and drove the team van and trailer on the other days.Since finishing the trip, I have served in a continuing advisory role, including helping to interview leaders for future trips, serving as selected leaders' mentors, reviewing new routes as an added safety check, and supporting periodic fundraising drives to benefit the organization and the affordable housing cause.
