Mr. Rosenthal has long been active in the efforts of the ACLU of Virginia. He chairs its statewide Legal Panel, which is responsible for reviewing and recommending Virginia cases on which the ACLU affiliate will focus its efforts. He also serves on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Virginia affiliate and on the board of its Northern Virginia Chapter. Mr. Rosenthal has been a member of the Virginia State Bar's Criminal Law Section since the 1970s; he also participates in the American Bar Associations Criminal Justice and Individual Rights Sections (1983-present), and the Criminal Law Section of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He serves in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and as a Master and Mentor in the George Mason University Chapter of the American Inns of Court, Mr. Rosenthal has testified on the constitutionality of proposed legislation before the Courts of Justice Committee of the Virginia House of Delegates and led the local bar’s effort to bring a Public Defender’s office to the Alexandria courts. Mr. Rosenthal is the author of “The Bill of Rights in Its 200th Year: A Casualty of the War on Drugs?” which was featured in the 1992 edition of George Mason University’s Civil Rights Law Journal. He is an occasional lecturer on the constitution and criminal law at schools and universities.
