The project embraced two complementary decision models: 1) A LP-based model capturing the production, storage, and transportation of gas, coal, and water, and the generation and transmission of electricity at the national level and 2) An agent-based framework for studying the interaction between US energy markets with different regulatory frameworksKey achievements:- Designed and implemented a linear programming-based model for the assessment of economic efficiency and reliability in the U.S. energy system- Created a database with infrastructure, market, and emissions data related to coal, natural gas, and electricity in the U.S. energy system- Developed metrics to inform decisions about infrastructure capacity expansions and large-scale interconnections- Developed metrics to evaluate the impact of disruptions in the system- Proposed and led a successful NSF $25.000 subsidiary project titled: Data collection following hurricane Katrina: Interdependencies across time, space, and subsystems characterizing bulk energy transportation
