As a Consultant for DuPont Sustainable Solutions I provided Process Safety expertise and work with companies, typically Major Hazard Facilities, across New Zealand to assess their Process Safety systems, build internal competency and to provide guidance as they develop and complete Formal Safety Assessments (FSAs).

As Lead Standards Engineer at BP my prime responsibility was developing and maintaining technical engineering standards and procedures whilst assessing changes to legislation and societal expectations on existing assets. I developed a formal, systematic process to document, evaluate, approve and communicate changes to standards and practices that could impact safe, responsible and reliable operating activity. In addition to my work delivering Engineering Standards I added value to the business by becoming a certified BP Incident Investigator and developing and leading verification of engineering design. During my time at BP I achieved the following: • Developed the 5-year Standards / Practices Plan and defined the work required to manage the availability and loading of Standard Engineers.• Implemented the BP Group Engineering Standards Control Procedure, this required understanding how the global expectations applied to the Australian assets and setting local requirements.• Extensively revised the engineering design process making it fit for purpose for the new organisational structure. I worked collaboratively with the key users of the new process and ran a day workshop for the engineering teams to launch the revised process. • Managed the release of new Standards using the BP Management of Change and Document Control systems, ensuring that affected parties are identified and the change clearly communicated to them.• Became a certified BP ‘Skilful’ Incident Investigator (Logic Tree Analysis) and completed two incident investigations. I communicated findings and recommendations to business leaders and worked with the business ensuring they understood the underlying causes identified. • Created local verification protocols for the Design and Construction element of the BP Operating Management System, and led Standards compliance reviews to verify that projects were conducted in accordance with BP’s expectations.

As a Design Engineer at Jott Engineering (a small consultancy group providing services in energy, industrial process and associated fields) I was involved in a wide range of projects from detailed design to feasibility and costing studies. As a member of a small consultancy team I was involved with all aspects of design projects including technical design work; customer relations; documentation and reporting; program and budget management; and managing resources to ensure deliverables are provided on time and budget.My role required strong organisational and planning skills, liaising with Customers, and management of myself and others within a team environment to ensure successful delivery of our projects.• Tender Design for a 21MW HFO / Diesel Engine Power Station- Site visit to Fiji to gather information on the brown field site / tie-in points- Technical liaison with our Customer including working in their offices for a week to assist in compiling the technical aspects of the Tender submission- Design of the Engine’s auxiliary systems, in particular the fuel supply, treatment and distribution system- Specification of the fuel system equipment: storage tanks, separators, pumps and piping- Fuel system design to convert existing diesel engines to HFO operation utilising existing infrastructure at site- Writing the Technical Proposal for the Tender Submission highlighting the commercial benefits and technical features of our design• Hot Water Piping Design & Pressure Vessel Compliance Review- Review of Pressure Vessel compliance to Australian Standards (AS 1210)- Piping Design including Pipe Stress Analysis (AutoPIPE)- Problem solving to find a suitable safety valve discharge design due to the existing vessel’s nozzle only being designed to take minimal reaction forces- Safety Valve Specification

I conducted research into blood splatter analysis for University of Canterbury. I used computer programs (Matlab) to create models and to perform image manipulation.

As a student engineer working in a mechanical technician role I learnt basic practical skills such as operating both manual and CNC lathes and mills, drilling and general assembly. I also learnt about general considerations for design for manufacture.

I produced manufacturing drawings using Solidworks and performed quality check measurements on parts with a Co-ordinate Measuring Machine.
