The development of an animal model is a crucial step towards the better understanding and treatment for a disorder. In the case of Tourette's syndrome (TS), a neurodevelopmental disorder whose cause is still unexplained, animal models are highly needed. For this reason, I developed a juvenile rat model of TS, that shows good face validity and strongly supports alterations of the direct and indirect striatal pathway as causative of tics, the main hallmark of TS. Lastly, we succesfully tested glutamatergic modulators, like riluzole, that could regulate striatal and thalamic pathways in order to reduce tic-like movements and we support their further investigation in patients.
