My strengths have always lain outside of the typical academic pursuits. Instead, I revel and thrive when I am engaged in efforts that center around people and improving their experiences in life. This began rather surreptitiously in one of my many trips overseas. Being far from home means I am usually less comfortable and relaxed. In such situations, I have been most impressed at the outstanding performance of Guest Experience Managers who successfully anticipated my needs and enhanced my overall experience. Thus began my interest in hospitality.Even in my admiration at impeccable service rendered, I am fully aware that the best intentions can be misconstrued. Having been privileged enough to have grown up in Singapore and been exposed to a myriad of cultures, I am acutely aware of the many differences in cultures and between individuals. Thus, while it is crucial to anticipate the guests’ needs, I feel that it is equally, if not more, important to ensure that the thoughtfulness is tempered with open-mindedness so I can be the person my guests need, not the persona I insist on portraying. Having ensured that the foundation is in place, I turn my attention to what fuels me today. My main driver is my passion. I have been privileged to have gained some insight into the industry, especially the job shadowing opportunities that also put me in touch with industry experts who have been generous with advice and clarification of my doubts. The content I learnt and the first-hand experiences have cemented my determination to pursue this path.
