."Multifunctional materials and sensory properties for design"The aim of this research (in l'Ecole des Mines and in Politecnico di Milano) was to develop, test and validate innovative tools and methodologies based both on design and engineering knowledge, in order to make the transition between sensorial properties and material choice easier and more efficient. Smart materials were included as highly valuable resources for innovation.Aims : • Definition of the objectives of the study• Methodology choice to reach the objectives• Creation of selection tools for functional materials. The aim was to take their sensory properties and the targeted user experience into account.• Creation of teaching material to spread knowledge on functional materials. Teaching was mainly directed to design and engineering students.Methods:• Proposal of a definition and classification for the various types of functional materials• Design and building of a database dedicated to functional materials and their properties (architecture, data choice and first data inputs)• Production of graphical supports for the understanding of the different types of functional materials and their properties.• Proposition and lead of a new teaching to introduce functional materials to students (lesson and exercices)• Proposition of tools and methods for the selection of functional materials• Publication of scientific articles and presentation of speeches and posters in conferencesAchievements:• Database architecture completed• Effective graphical support for teaching and introducing functional materials.
