First, I worked in the physics department, assisting biophysics doctoral students with both experimental and theoretical work in various capacities.I then moved to the Mechanical Engineering Dept. Biomechanics group (specifically in the Human Dynamics Lab), performing data collection for several different projects, instrument design/calibration, and data analysis. Additionally, I started my own project for summer/fall 2016 creating a portable and accurate calibration table for use with the Inertial Measurment Units (IMUs) brought into the field for data collection, this project aiming to improve both breadth of possible measurements, overall accuracy, and consistency of readings from measurement-to-measurement.

In this internship at the NewSpace startup FFD, I had the opportunity to work on a few parts under a NASA SBIR grant to later be tested in Mars-like conditions, and made contributions towards growing potential non-government revenue streams in addition to helping the team secure another significant NASA grant for work on innovative mechanical counter-pressure EVA gloves. Personally, I made manufacturable 3D CAD models of the various metallic restraint components existing within the space suit. From there, I focused on restraint pieces within the EVA glove in order to to upgrade their functionality/performance and to optimize the pieces for 3d printing in a cost-effective way. I also performed stress analyses (using finite element analysis functionality in Solidworks) on these models to assess the benefits/risks of possible design changes. Beyond the modeling, I also worked with others to prototype, test, and analyze results for the real-life parts we manufactured.I also helped represent the company to potential investors both in the office and at external startup-oriented events/competitions in addition to public outreach and educational/volunteer events.
