My first job ever, at 16 years old, was at a candle store at the Mall of America. I loved working as a sales associate because I was able to talk and relate to people all day long as well as be their candle expert. I was able to help customers pick and choose the best candle for them based on their needs. For example, some customers had allergies to paraffin wax and so I'd be able to show them our soy wax blend candles instead. I throughly enjoyed being able to help my customers find products that best suited them and their household. It was thanks to my first job that I discovered a passion for working with people. I also discovered that I love to work in a team and that I value making relationships and connections with others. Over the years, I have been able to further my communication and teamwork skills by finding my place within the pharmacy profession. Before attending pharmacy school, I started out working as a pharmacy technician in the community setting which really solidified my passion for working with people. This was further reinforced when I started working at Hennepin Healthcare, since I was able to work closely with the Spanish speaking community. I realized that I wanted to use my Spanish and English speaking skills to assist patients in a meaningful way. Working in pharmacy has given me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and use my language skills in order to best serve our communities. At the present time, I work as a pharmacist intern for the inpatient pharmacy at Hennepin Healthcare. I have been trained in medication reconciliation services, sterile compounding, and checking off medication orders. I have enjoyed learning and training in both the community and inpatient settings and I look forward to applying my skills in other aspects of pharmacy.
