Nasa X-43A Guidance, Navigation, And Controls EngineerNasa Afrc Jan 1999 - May 2005From 1999 to 2005 I worked the Hyper-X program full time. I ended the program as the X-43A Ship 3 GNC lead. I worked all flight controls related aspects of the program including: control law design, linear analysis, subsystem modeling, simulation and analysis, Monte Carlo analysis, software V&V, Hardware & Aircraft in the loop testing, flight-test, Flight 1 mishap investigation, Hyper-X Launch Vehicle review & modeling, and authoring technical papers. During this time, I enjoyed interfacing with engineers across multiple organizations, such as LaRC and Orbital Sciences, and developed valuable experience working with engineers across multiple disciplines. A major accomplishment in this timeframe was leading, and doing technical work in support of, the effort to redesign the X-43A flight control laws between the 2nd and 3rd flights. The challenge was to do a thorough technical job of the flight control design in the face of strong schedule pressures on a high visibility program. I have authored 4 technical papers on the X-43A flights and co-authored 4 others. The 2nd and 3rd flights of the X-43A accomplished all of the primary and secondary objectives. I consider this remarkable since we were focused on ensuring the success of the engine test, which was the primary objective, and were given little time to work on the secondary objectives, which included parameter identification maneuvers during the descent and the flush airdata sensing system. The 3rd flight of the X-43A was very successful and I consider my contribution to that success as one of my greatest achievement at DFRC.
