I am a passionate and driven Master's student at the Univeristy of Calgary, specializing in molecular biology in Dr. Marcus Samuel’s laboratory. My research focuses on identifying and optimizing the most effective CRISPR Cas systems for application in canola, with the aim of advancing crop improvement strategies.With a primary interest in harnessing the potential of CRISPR Cas technology, I am dedicated to exploring and optimizing CRISPR Cas systems to enhance traits and improve yield in canola, a vital agricultural crop in Canada.During my undergraduate studies, I undertook two significant projects that have shaped my understanding of plant biotechnology and deepened my knowledge of canola:1. Exploration of Transformation Techniques for Herbicide-Resistant Canola: I investigated various transformation techniques aimed at producing herbicide-resistant canola, including Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and particle bombardment. I gained valuable insights into the challenges and potential solutions for creating herbicide-resistant canola varieties through tissue culture.2. Self-incompatibility mechanisms in canola. I explored the genetic factors regulating pollen recognition and compatibility, deepening my understanding of plant reproductive biology.Professional Skills:Molecular Biology: Proficient in a wide range of molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, infusion cloning and DNA sequencing.CRISPR Cas9: Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in designing and implementing CRISPR Cas9 systems for targeted gene editing.Plant Biotechnology: Well-versed in plant transformation techniques, tissue culture, and genetic modification methods specific to canola and other crops, such as soybean.Scientific Writing: Excellent written communication skills demonstrated through research papers, grant proposals, and scientific presentations.In my free time, I am an avid hockey player, engaging in the sport several times a week. Playing team sports not only promotes physical fitness but also instills valuable qualities such as teamwork, strategic thinking, and discipline.
