Specializing in Automation with Ansible, I work with Red Hat customers to streamline medium to large deployments of RHEL servers and network assets. Projects range from installs of Ansible Tower clusters (frequently with HA and DR aspects) to creating customized Ansible Roles and Playbooks that provision and manage routers and firewalls.

The Columbus Idea Foundry is our local "community workshop" where folks can take classes, rent workspace and tools, and collaborate with other Makers, Artisans, and Artists. My roles there include teaching classes on 3D Printers, Electronics, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, as well as organizing regular meetups for 3D Printing (RepRap and MakerBots) and Raspberry Pi and helping organize and run the Columbus Mini Maker Faire.

Primarily support of existing userbase of COMBOARD DEC-to-IBM communications adapters product line. Added manufacture and support of GG2 Bus+ Zorro-to-ISA bus adapters for the Amiga.

Contract position through TEKsystems, supporting developers of Scifinder and other CAS products building System and App Stacks with Docker on Ubuntu Server and CentOS on OpenStack, updating with Puppet and Ansible, automating build processes on Jenkins, capturing and serving system and application logs with Elasticsearch/Logstash/Kibana, and monitoring with Thruk, Shinken, Graphite, and Grafana.

Contract position through TEKsystems as Linux and Solaris SME taking over virtualization and migration tasks as part of a large-scale datacenter migration effort. Supported development team in DEV and QA Java/Tomcat/Apache environments. Executed and refined Code Deployments and documented process for accurately building matching production environments. Rehosted in-house applications from Solaris on physical boxes to RHEL VMs on VMware. Updated Nagios configurations through the transition.

Linux Admin and production support, automating build and install and monitoring processes. Currently focusing on Nagios on Ubuntu Server and CentOS in a fast-paced mix of physical and virtual machines.

Short-term contract position through TEKsystems, working on the team that supported the Integrated Test Facility in Columbus, a production and DR pre-implementation test site. Developed and documented firmware upgrade procedure for HP c7000 blade chassis, modified vendor-supplied Python scripts to work with in-house naming schemes to deploy and delete voice-mail-response VMs, added repositories to in-house RedHat Satellite, wrote Perl scripts to collect and process system performance data, and assisted VMware and Windows-focused team-members with Linux issues.

Linux/UNIX Systems Engineer maintained multiple datacenter sites with Ubuntu Server, RedHat, and Solaris physical and virtual machines hosting the Manta.com website. Worked with Open Source tools and platforms (Apache, Nginx, Varnish, Postgres, JobScheduler, Kibana, Logstash, etc.) and proprietary applications (MicroStrategy, Oracle, Datadog). Set up prototypes of new technologies for evaluation by management/business. Built in-house system monitoring service on Nagios automated with Puppet and Git. Improved site reliability by replacing hosting provider's DNS with HA DNS scheme based on Heartbeat and Pacemaker. Transitioned servers and services out of managed hosting environment into Amazon's Cloud service. Transitioned from legacy Oracle systems to Postgres. Migrated departmental documentation servers to new environment. Led multiple Lunch-and-Learns, entered Hackathon. Represented Manta at technical talks at Ohio Linux Fest and other conferences.

Linux System Administrator for a QSI customer in the educational market supporting a custom Java/Tomcat application and RedHat/CentOS on VMware ESXi running on Dell M1000e Blade Chassis with EqualLogic SAN, tied together with Cisco switches, ACE Firewall, and ASA Loadbalancer.

Responsible for maintaining the data center in the IceCube Laboratory at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in support of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. While primarily a RedHat Linux System Administration position, the demands of the location and the months of isolation in the winter also require a broad spectrum of diagnosis, debugging, and repair skills from cables and connectors to servers (a mix of off-the-shelf HP and custom-built for the experiment boxes) to software components ranging from device drivers and firmware all the way up the chain to Java application code. Maintained up-times of 98% over the winter months in what may be the ultimate "remote" setting on Earth.

Developed and deployed a state-wide network monitoring and traffic statistics collection system for the client, Time-Warner Cable/RoadRunner. Rolled out a script-driven, push-button-deployed site capture application based on MRTG, but with enhancements to accommodate RoadRunner's specific needs (parsing Cisco and Iron Foundry-proprietary SNMP MIBs to track environmental data on top of raw traffic data). The four site demonstration prototype was used on its first weekend of operation to quantify and locate a live outage, and was credited with cutting more than 50% off the usual time to research the problem, permitting a swifter response to restore full service to the subscribers.
