Ethan Done Email and Phone Number
Hello, my name is Ethan Done, and I hope to be the most ambitious Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology student you will ever meet.I want to make the world a better place through science! I conducted research focusing on Aphanomyces at the Government of Canada's Agriculture and AgriFoods. I also founded my own molecular diagnostics company: Pathoscan Technologies Inc. This company seeks to put recent advances in biotechnology and PCR into a package that anyone can use. Recently, I began working on a project of my design at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (Vido). I have over 2,000 hours of in-person microbiology lab experience, a 90% GPA across 30 classes, and am seeking to pursue a Master's degree upon my graduation in 2025.

Scientific Lead / Co-FounderPathoscan Oct 2022 - PresentSaskatoon, Saskatchewan, CanadaIn October of 2022, I went to the Co. Hack funding night with a vision for a portable PCR system that would allow anyone, anywhere, to test for any disease. I gathered a team, and together we won the funding night and its associated prize money. We have since used this money to incorporate Pathoscan and to start development of our product. This experience highlights my personality as a hustler and my tenacity to achieve my goals. For example, to support the building of our prototype not only did I negotiate a supply deal with an equipment manufacturer on Alibaba, but I also gathered over $3,000 worth of free lab supplies from various biotech companies including NEB. Thermofisher Scientific, and FeCellitate. As such, the true value of research dollars has become apparent to me.This position has also given me experience in creating research proposals, applying for grants, and designing experiments! Furthermore, I have also gained networking experience by attending events such as Uniting the Prairies, and the Startup TNT pitch night. This experience also gives me a unique business skillset. I can do market research, have familiarity with economic terms including TAM and SOM, can perform a 3 minute pitch, and can do financial projections! -
Researcher/Heritage Fair Committee ExecutiveHeritage Saskatchewan May 2021 - PresentSaskatoon, Saskatchewan, CanadaMy work with Heritage Saskatchewan includes both paid and volunteer positions. I first started working with Heritage Saskatchewan in 2019, when I gave presentations to students about my experience in the Heritage Fairs program. In 2020, I was contracted as a researcher, where I provided a youth's opinion on their various programs, and proposed the High School Heritage Challenge. I was involved in every step of getting this program started, including creating a mailing list of over 300 emails encompassing various high school educators from across the province! This year, I am also happy to announce that I will be joining the 2024 Saskatoon Regional Heritage Fair Organizing Committee! On this committee, I intend to help Heritage Saskatchewan re-launch the in-person regional Heritage Fair in Saskatoon by helping to plan and execute the event. To be clear, this is a volunteer position. -
ResearcherGovernment Of Canada Mar 2022 - Apr 2024Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, CanadaI currently work under Dr. J. Town as a FSWEP student. In her lab, I primarily work on developing qPCR assays that will detect Aphanomyces Euteiches despite sequence diversity. I also have experience culturing different strains of Oomycetes, and have completed bacterial transformations to clone sequences of interest from wild-type strains. In the course of my work, I have also used the Illumina Myseq pipeline from soil extraction to data processing in R. Additionally, working at the AAFC has allowed me to practice experimental design. For example, recently I was given the opportunity to design a "bait assay" experiment, in which soils are tested for infectivity via serial dilution. -
