About Ethan Helm, Phd
Ethan Helm is one the most exciting young jazz saxophonists, flutists, and composers of his generation. Based in New York City, Helm's musical experiments are both thought-provoking and grooving, tuneful and mysterious, rooted in history and searching for the future. He leads the genre-hopping “Cowboys & Frenchmen,” releasing three albums on the Outside in Music record label, garnering frequent radio play and a four-star review in Downbeat Magazine, as well as three U.S. tours. Their most recent creation is the 45-minute video album "Our Highway," composed and directed by Helm, and released in 2021 to rave reviews. He also composes and arranges for jazz ensembles (US Air Forces in Europe Band, Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra), orchestras (American Composers Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of St. Matthew's), film, and dance. He has performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, as well as the most storied jazz clubs in NYC as a leader and with ensembles like Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project, Brad Shepik’s Balkan Peppers, and Miho Hazama's m_unit. Helm was a featured presenter at the 2016 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference, performing his suite, “Paul Desmond’s Sound,” with the Texas Tech University Jazz Ensemble. Ethan grew up in a musical family in Southern California, holds degrees from Eastman School of Music (BM) and New York University (MM, PhD), where he is an adjunct faculty member.
