Worked with Professor Eric Hudson in the UCLA AMO Hudson Lab. Goal of the project is to measure reaction rates of very cold molecular reactions, such as the reaction of C+ with H2O, which is a reaction known to take place in interstellar medium. To get C+ ions, we needed to build and test an electron gun that would ionize the carbon atoms. I built and tested an electron gun and used an Einzel lens system combined with iron-core magnets to optimize the beam’s maximum current along its projected axis.

Goal was to measure and model the amorphous phase and crystalline phase densities of binary water-cryoprotectant mixtures. Researched the densities of these mixtures using liquid nitrogen and liquid argon. This data will be extremely useful for X-ray crystallography of proteins.

Worked on the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) project with Doctor Peter Blake and his optics team for two consecutive summers. LCRD will be used on satellites and will use lasers to encode and transmit data instead of using the traditional radio frequency (RF) communication and will have rates 10 to 100 times faster than RF-based communication. The wavelength of the laser light is shorter than radio waves and reduces the area the energy spreads as it travels through space thus reducing the energy use and waste. I worked alongside LCRD engineers and participated in the alignment and testing of the Optical Test Set (OTS), an experimental facility that is being readied to test the Optical Assembly and integrate the Optical Module. Some personal responsibilities included:- alignment and operation of the calibration beam in red and infrared wavelengths- Wavefront analysis for calibration beam through telescope and eventually small optics- General alignment of OTS optics and breadboards- Computational analysis to evaluate system accuracy, precision and stability.
