Optimism, resilience, and the ability to teach/mentor are three values that I try to exemplify in my everyday life. Not only do I give high value to these characteristics I also believe that they are important in my pursuit for a degree in management from Indiana University.Optimism : I played football my whole life and my senior season I was lucky enough to be elected captain. I was having a successful season when in our sixth game I was involved in a tackle that resulted in a full break of my ankle. This caused me to not be able to play for the remainder of the season. Now, I was to remain optimistic and be a leader in this tough time. Even though I was not able to physically play I was still heavily invested in the team's overall success. I used my knowledge of the game to help coach and prepare the rest of the team during practice. I was cheering on my team every practice and game making sure energy and morale was always high. I would like to think that my optimism, even through an injury, was able to help the team even if I was not physically able to. Resilience : My freshman year of college I was majoring in computer engineering. I overestimated my computer skills and was placed in some classes that were above my current knowledge. In my engineering class, for the final, I was given the task of making a weather device given only a Rasberry Pi. I had never done any work with a Rasberry Pi and was still not very confident with coding in Java-Script. I dedicated myself for weeks to making the best possible weather device that I could. I ended up creating a weather device that I was very proud of and received an “A” on the final project.Teach/Mentor : This past summer I decided to work at a summer camp as a counselor. I was assigned to take care of nine eight year old's for seven weeks. Over these weeks I taught these kids many life skills through sports and other activities. For example I taught a kid how to fold their clothes. I was able to be much more than a counselor to these kids, and became their friend and mentor. I was able to perform well because of my charisma and good attitude towards my job. It was extremely rewarding to have come out of the summer with many new friends and knowing that I taught some kids some new life skills.
