Summer Camp Counselor

South River, On

Being a counselor at Camp Ozanam was a life changing experience. The boys that attend camp Ozanam come from underprivileged homes in Toronto and Barrie and many are sent by Children's Aid Societies. Some of these boys have been through hardships that i would have never imagined when i was their age, yet they still have so much spirit and love in their hearts. My goal every week was to create an atmosphere of love, kindness, and fun for every camper. I strove to create a sense of family among the boys in my cabin by challenging them to always work as a team, look out for each other, and overcome their disagreements. One of my most cherishable memories was taking a section of cabins to the beach to look at the stars. The boys were amazed. I had never seen a group of thirty 11-year-olds quieter in my life. They were ecstatic when they saw shooting stars, as many had never seen one while growing up in the city. It was also amazing to work with a staff that was so motivated to make camp the best week of the year for these boys. I am forever grateful for my summers at Camp Ozanam.
