Phase 1 Engineer
Rosemont, Illinois, United States
As a Phase 1 Engineer at Christopher B. Burke Engineering, I was able to utilize my work ethic and gain real-world experience in a professional engineering environment where I not only perfected my problem-solving skills but also perfected my soft skills when taking feedback from concerned citizens. My coworkers at CBBEL helped me develop a strong professional demeanor and we cultivated a professional yet fun workplace environment.During my time in the Phase 1 department, I was given issues from improving the streetscape quality and capacity to ensuring existing streetscapes were ADA-compliant. The process began with an analysis of the existing conditions using survey data and writing a professional report summarizing my findings. I then began using CAD software called Microstation to draw the geometry of the new features and the materials that would be used. Several alternatives would be considered and ultimately a public meeting would be held where I would defend why we picked the option that was selected. During this process, I did cost estimations using a database of material costs. During these meetings, I fielded questions about the project and the design as well. An official document was then submitted to the State of Illinois Department of Transportation for review. I was also involved in filling out documentation for applications for federal funding. While I was working at CBBEL, I gave a speech and presentation at a registered Toastmasters meeting. I attended several Toastmasters meetings and learned the best practices for professional speaking and presentations. I also utilized Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to make presentations and official documentation where best business practices were utilized and I had to ensure professional formatting and language.
