I am a machine learning expert with a PhD in the area. I work as a Postdoctorate Research Fellow with the UNSW Creative Robotics Lab.My PhD research was in data efficient machine learning. My honours research was in multimodal interfaces. I have a strong interest in improving communication between computers and users in order to improve people's productivity. During my undergraduate study and research I came to feel that one strong requirement for improving this communication was to increase the capacity of computers to understand the situation and intent of a user. This lead me to move in to research on machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence. In that research I have experimented with a variety of techniques to produce data efficient ML systems which can learn or adjust behaviours based on only tens or hundred of examples.Each year from 2017 to 2021 (bar 2020, which was cancelled) I participated in the RoboCup Standard Platform League (SPL) as a member of UNSW's rUNSWift team, achieving 3rd place in the 2019 world competition. The RoboCup SPL challenges teams from around the world to compete in a robot soccer tournament. In the SPL all teams must use unmodified humanoid Softbank Nao robots, so the competition is primarily decided by software. There are no restrictions on team membership, so teams consist of diverse groups of undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers and volunteers. Through my participation in the rUNSWift team I have learned how to effectively work in a team to build a larger project. I have made contributions to all components of the rUNSWift code base. I was particularly involved with developing the robot's vision system. I optimised large parts of the code base to run as quickly as possible with the limited processing power available. I have also contributed to the motion, state estimation and behaviour systems used by the robots.
