About Ethan Smith

For over 23 years, I have been the co-founder and CEO of Starfield & Smith, P.C., a law firm that specializes in SBA and government guaranteed lending compliance and conventional commercial lending. I lead a team of highly skilled attorneys who represent lenders nationwide in all aspects of SBA-related matters, including closings, servicing, liquidation, guarantee purchase, audit preparation and response, regulatory licensing, and portfolio transfers. We have extensive experience in the 7(a) and 504 loan programs, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).As a recognized authority in the field, I have closed hundreds of complex and multi-jurisdictional loan transactions, served as an expert witness for SBA litigation cases, and acted as subject matter counsel for securitizations of SBA loan portfolios. I am also a prolific writer and speaker on SBA and government guaranteed lending issues, and have been honored with an “AV” rating from Martindale Hubbell and multiple “Super Lawyer” and “Rising Star” awards. I am a board member of the National Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders (NAGGL) and an affiliate member of the National Association of Development Companies (NADCO).
