Head Of Neuroscience And Biology
Current• Led a team of analysts to deliver large computational neuroscience projects to labs at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.• Constructed a computer vision pipeline to automatically process and extract data from images of Golgi-stained neurons for spine analysis.• Developed algorithms to construct 3D models of neurons from Z-stacks, allowing additional structural data to be collected.• Designed scripts to classify dendritic spines from 3D models.• Integrated Python libraries (i.e. OpenCV) with Java libraries/software (i.e. ImageJ) to create superior computer vision solutions.• Developed algorithms to both isolate and count in-focus dendritic spines, and to reliably mask only secondary dendritic branches for spine morphology analysis.
Co-Founder
Current
Machine Learning Intern
Current• Led end-to-end development of machine learning models to predict future hospitalizations, including data extraction, preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, hyperparameter optimization, and performance evaluation.• Engineered clinically meaningful features from patient-level clinical data, continuous ballistocardiography metrics, regional data, and patient demographics to enhance predictive power.• Collaborated with physicians and enhanced model interpretability using SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) values, Partial Dependence Plots (PDPs), and decision tree visualizations to reinforce the clinical applicability of the model.
Research Assistant
Current• Developing a machine learning-oriented approach to reliably predict and model the progression of disease as a member of the Brambilla and Liebl laboratory.
Research Assistant
Current• Investigating the genetic underpinnings of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT), the most common heritable neuropathy, as a member of the Zuchner laboratory.
Student Observer
• Shadowed at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics (UMHC) Spine Clinic.• Observed the diagnosis of spinal conditions from CT scans, MRI images, DEXA scans, and other resources.
Teaching Fellow
Current• Led weekly General Biology workshops for students enrolled in PRISM, UM’s science honors program.
First-Year Fellow
Current• Provided academic guidance to first-year students and arranged several community engagement events to promote student wellbeing.• Resolved concerns of both students and student staff as a member of the Student Staff Council.
Clinton Global Initiative University Fellow
Current• Selected to work with global leaders to devise and scale solutions that address barriers to accessible music education in many African communities.• Presented "Tieu Tunes" to peers and distinguished figures in the fields of service and business.
Founder, Tutor
Current• Designed, assembled, and distributed 3D-printed violins to students in Kenya.• Assembled a team of African music educators to assist with the administration of on-site violin lessons.• Administrated in coordination with Swahilipot Hub, a non-profit organization based in Mombasa, Kenya.
Visiting Student Researcher
• Investigated the genetic underpinnings of Alzheimer's Disease by using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to determine how APP, MAPT, APOE, and similar genes can augment levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS)• Developed software to quantify ROS from EPR spectra with greater accuracy and reliability, which continues to support the Yan Lab.• Extracted protein from human brain samples and mice brain samples for ROS quantification
Nih-Funded Research Assistant
• Investigated hippocampal neurotoxicity resulting from environmental toxicants on mice as a member of the Hossain laboratory at Florida International University.
Student Observer
• Shadowed in a clinic at the Desai Sethi Medical Center specializing in muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular diseases, such as CMT, for 80 hours.• Observed patients alongside neurologists, dietitians, social workers, and genetic therapists.
Summer Research Intern
