"There's a way to do it better–find it." Thomas Edison said these words to his team of fellow rebels and scientists as he worked to change the world from Menlo Park, New Jersey in the late 1800s. What I love most about Thomas Edison's story of repeated innovation is not necessarily his tenacity or even his track record of introducing new technologies to an awestruck world (he was known as "The Wizard of Menlo Park"). What I love about Edison's journey is his direct, almost blunt reliance on his team.Behind every entrepreneur, every CEO, and every dreamer is someone who can find the way "to do it better." It doesn't necessarily take genius – it takes grit. It takes creativity, but not in solitude – creativity must be applied through logic, reason, and a healthy dose of skepticism. For Edison, it was John Kruesi, his lead machinist who didn't flinch when Edison handed him a rough sketch in 1877 of the world's first-ever conceived phonograph with the words "Make this." Edison dreamed it. Kruesi made it. I like Edison (can you tell?). I identify with John Kruesi.I am a creator. But you might not call me entrepreneur. I excel in launching projects, building processes, and applying logic to dreams to make them real. I am a communicator. Whether written, spoken, or shown, a story is only as good as the charisma with which it is told. I thrive when I'm telling stories.Finally, I am a captain. A team is not "only as good as its leader." A team is only as good as its leader allows them to be. Collaboration is not only essential, it's strategic – and best of all, it's a whole lot of fun. My own narrative is one filled with initiative, creativity, and learning. I've helped launch startups. I've given private lectures and public speeches to thousands of students and employees. I've marketed everything from enterprise software to kitchen appliances. I have a soft spot for anything weird. If you're looking for someone normal, I'm the opposite.
