What does Dead Poets Society, Stand and Deliver, and Boy Meets World have in common?Yes, they are all movies that are based around an educational setting. But deeper than that, is the fact that all these educational classroom settings are the EXACT same, but spanning 30 YEARS! Dead Poets was set in 1959, the classroom showed kids in a desk, in straight rows, looking straight ahead. Stand and Deliver, set 20 years later in 1980, has the same classroom orientation. Boy Meets World, the 90's sitcom which my generation grew up on, cloned that same classroom too! What's shocking about this realization is that the school we went to, and schools in our communities are still cloning the classroom layouts of 1959. BUT WHY?Education has changed tremendously in 60 years, but I can't help but feel that classrooms have been left behind. Research has shown that classroom furniture, that makes students move and interact with their environment, can increase student participation, and retention of learning! Isn't that what we WANT?I believe that every school in America needs a wake up call when it comes to classroom furniture.
