Operations Engineering Co-Op

Mount Vernon, Indiana, United States

I worked a single co-op rotation during Summer 2024. My largest project this term was to improve the BPA unit's phenolic tar cracker, which involved developing a comprehensive thermal model of the heat exchanger and back-calculating a realistic range of steam demand. These bounds were then used to resize two steam valves on the cracker to reduce manual oversight and improve controllability. In addition, I coordinated a significant amount of maintenance work, including fixing the root causes of multiple pump faults and making improvements to the process area ventilation system. I also worked with vendors to develop a scope to upgrade the vacuum compressor & motor on one of our production line's phenol desorbing heat exchangers. I got to do some process engineering on the side, where I read hundreds of pages of design documents to fully understand one of our dehydration columns and investigate some recent efficiency losses. An overall great term!

Chemical Engineering Co-Op

Freeport, Texas, United States

I worked a single co-op rotation during Fall 2023. My largest contribution, and proudest work to date, would be my justification of $20K+ in cost savings (resource use reduction) and $1.7M+ in lost production avoidance. I validated vessel PRLs for emergency relief sitewide and filed many scope forms to qualitatively estimate risk. I was able to start my own project from scratch, during which I sized, quoted, and planned the installation of valves in a cost-saving project to reduce steam usage. Additionally, I automated the collection, storage, and visualization of MOD V IO deviation data, both for IO Exceptions and Manual Overrides. I also frequently updated P&IDs, MOD V graphics, equipment tags, and PHA-LOPA documentation.

Production Engineering Co-Op

Cincinnati, Ohio, United States

I worked a single co-op rotation during Spring 2023. I led the Specialty Esters batch production quality testing program, which utilized near-infrared spectrometers to check specifications were acceptable. Additionally, I rewrote and customized Excel tools to record the Fatty Acids continuous production data and confirm against filed work orders. On a monthly basis, I performed plant-wide integrity inspections and safety checks on most vessels, both within and outside of retaining walls. I also coordinated trials for a new reactant and accompanying chemistry formulation, which included sample collection and distribution to clients.

Controls Engineering Co-Op

Indianapolis, Indiana, United States

I worked two co-op sessions, one during Fall 2021 and another during Summer 2022. I studied process control and the Emerson brand distributed control systems DeltaV. I upgraded, created, and tested operator graphic interfaces and their associated runtime logic scripts. A major focus of my work was updating control modules and databases, usually to match standardized libraries, and filing all associated revision documentation. Once, I had the opportunity to create and configure dev-servers on the company intranet. I overhauled the organization of our on-site warehouse and independently managed shipping logistics.

Head Lifeguard

City Of Amherst Parks Department

Amherst, Ohio, United States

As Head Lifeguard I oversaw the entire facility and performed duties as acting manager. I vigilantly safeguarded patrons and communicated with them. On occasion I facilitated health, food, and safety inspections with the respective county departments.
