• Conduct environmental risk assessments to ensure that the impacts of operations on the environment are adequately addressed.• Investigate environmental incidents to ensure that mitigation and preventative measures are put in place.• Assist in internal and external SHE audits at operations.• Development of site specific environmental management plans and procedures.• Carry out regular inspections to maintain a legally compliant operation in terms of safety and environmental legislation.• Maintenance of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.• Monitoring and reporting on implementation and compliance to all licenses and Environmental Authorisation requirements.• Monitoring and reporting on environmental performance e.g. waste management, air quality, ground water quality, water consumption and effluent disposal.• Assist in compiling of the Integrated Water and Waste Management Plan.• Identification and reporting of environmental hazards.• Analysis and reporting of data to management and government stakeholders.• Attendance of external environmental related forums.• Responsible for environmental co-ordination and compliance of construction projects.• Conduct environmental training and induction of staff and contractors• Provide support and environmental advice to departments.• Regular communication and awareness raising on environmental matters.• Budget and cost control

• Assist with management of department to ensure safe, legal and efficient waste management services.• Monitor legal compliance of solid waste collection and disposal operations.• Administration of daily waste collection and disposal operations.• Manage contractors at disposal facilities.• Assist in compiling and managing budgets. • Interact with the public regarding service delivery demands.• Handle complaints.• Implement waste minimisation programmes.• Compile tender specifications and perform technical evaluation on tenders.• Represent municipality at waste meetings and forums.

• Assist with the development and implementation of provincial legislation, policies, strategies, standards and guidelines with regard to pollution and waste management.• Implement and monitor programmes and projects related to pollution and waste management.• Assist municipalities with respect to pollution and waste management• Support and implement environmental awareness and education programmes• Assist with environmental calendar events and programmes.• Review and comment on Integrated Development Plans (IDPs), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Integrated Waste Management Plans (IWMPs) and other specialist studies.• Assist with the development of the Integrated Pollutant and Waste Information System (IPWIS)• Conduct workshops with stakeholders on Pollution and Waste programmes.• Investigate complaints relating to pollution and waste management.• Monitor compliance of municipalities and industry to environmental legislation.• Liaise with other governmental departments, private industry and non-governmental organisations regarding pollution and waste management.• Represent the Department on Landfill monitoring committees.
