• Worked cross functionally across the company to effect change within the product and engineering organizations• Helped a team diagnose database performance issues in a business critical service. Worked with the team to migrate from MySQL to PostgreSQL with minimal downtime using AWS DMS achieving an 80% reduction in p99 latency• Produced extensive documentation of a legacy monolith codebase. This documentation was used by all engineering teams when planning work for a business critical project.• Drove adoption of async Python for microservices. Developed boilerplate service using FastAPI, Pydantic, and Ormar, to provide teams with a starting implementation which is now in use for all new services at Top Hat.

• Led full stack development (Python, Flask, Docker, React, Deck.gl) across the GridOS productline. Focused on designing a reliable distributed service architecture that can be deployed either in the cloud or on-premise.• Successfully led a team to develop and deploy a live electricity market in California (see link below). This system analyzes and dispatches PV / batteries in the field to enable safe electrical grid operation.• Mentored other developers in both 1 to 1 and group settings. • Designed, documented and communicated the software architecture design for the GridOS platform. Worked with business, product, and sales leaders to understand customer requirements and translate them to code.• Championed the use of development tools such as distributed tracing and profiling. Provided training and coaching to developers on how to effectively use these tools.• Conducted pre-sales technical presentations with partners and customers to aid their understanding of our platform.

As a Staff Software Developer for National Instruments, I have primarily been involved with the design and implementation of Multisim Live (https://beta.multisim.com/). This project successfully created a complex client-side web application that allows a user to create and simulate an electronic circuit completely in their web browser. Technical Highlights:• Designed and architected key parts of the application including the controller and view layers. • Introduced automated unit testing. Selected and set-up Selenium to support testing on multiple browsers, operating systems, and devices. Introduced code metrics such as coverage analysis.• Built UI components based on HTML5 WebComponents and Google's Polymer library• Implemented new features in C++ code that was compiled to JS using Emscripten• Improved data decimation performance by 4x on large datasets (250k+ points) while reducing memory usage and improving code readability. Non Technical Highlights:• User story identification and grooming. Responsible for grooming user stories directly with the product owner in four key areas of the product.• Liaising with other internal teams including UX, marketing, and R&D groups to ensure that user stores are completed fully, meet all end-user requirements, and share code with other NI products where possible.• Mentoring of co-op students in the Toronto office. Selection of projects for the co-op students that are in line with their skills and that are also interesting to work on. Provided timely feedback to co-op students to improve their performance.

As a software developer at National Instruments, I have had the opportunity to work on a number of exciting projects. Highlights from these projects include:• Overhauled the entire Multisim and Ultiboard C++ codebases to support a variable number of component databases allowing National Instruments to recognize an entirely new product, Multisim Blue: http://ca.mouser.com/multisimblue/• Independently started a research project to convert Multisim databases to SQLite. I improved measured performance significantly while at the same time reducing code size and adding the first unit tests covering the database interface. Pitched the project to management for inclusion in a future release.• Worked with a colleague to prototype a conversion of a large C++ application to support an x64 build. Refactored custom UI widgets to update a base UI library that was included from source and that had been heavily modified over a number of years. Pitched the project to management for inclusion in a future release.• Tracked down and fixed an elusive memory leak that reduced simulation memory usage by up to 90%

• Conducted timing characterization of graphics chip analog I/Os using Spice simulators and STA tools.• Ensured that Verilog modelling was accurate and that both models and schematics performed as expected.• Wrote and debugged Perl scripts to automate job tasks.• Provided training to new interns and contract employees in the team.
