Club Captain oversees the day-to-day running of the club and communicates with all necessary external organizations, including the Lancaster University Student's Union, British Rowing and other local and national rowing clubs. The role chairs and manages the 14-member executive committee, with the goal of maintaining a positive direction for the club to keep moving in. Effectively communicating with the large member base of the club (~130 active members in Dec '23) is key in both informing and relaying the club's events and decisions.

This role runs the novice men's squad - this encompasses all male students in their first year of rowing, usually between 20 and 30 members. Responsibilities include;-Creating and delivering a structured, detailed training plan for the year-Recruiting students with little-to-no rowing experience to be members of the club within the first few weeks of Michaelmas term-Organizing each week's outings on the water from the squad's availability-Coaching and organizing coaching and supervision for on-water and land-based sessions throughout the week -Communicating with other squad captains to organise use of equipment and training times-Communicating with the squad members and welfare officers to ensure consistent and good squad wellbeing-Tracking attendance and progress of squad members throughout the year -Using the above metrics, personal judgement of on-water technique, and training availability to select crews for races-Attend weekly exec meetings to debrief squad updates and further discuss the running of the clubThe goals of this role are successful performances for the squad at BUCS competitions, the roses varsity match and other national races - as well as providing adept preparation for these rowers to enter the senior squad the following year. Across all responsibilities the work load is roughly 15-20 hours a week, but can be more at 'crunch' periods of the season i.e. first few weeks of term, training camps and weeks leading up to major races where more on-water time may be necessary.
