My role extended across all aspects of the editorial department:* finance (the editorial budgets ran to more than £70m* human resources* consultation with the journalists' union on wages and conditions* disciplinary procedures* editorial systems (during my tenure I oversaw the selection and introduction of a new content management systemfor all the national titles) * development of the group's digital operationsLike most newspaper publishers Trinity Mirror suffered massive declines in circulation revenue and advertising asreaders switched to digital platforms.This resulted in the company asking for major reductions in the cost of the titltes' editorial operations. Over six years Ipersonally led a number of cost reduction programmes which saw nearly £40m stripped out of the business. It meantthinking smarter, taking bold decisions which would secure the long-term future of the titles.The pressure on costs - exacerbated by the company's strategy of heavy investment in the titles' digital operations - ledto a stream-lining of senior management in November last year. As a result of this I left the business in January.
