Corporate ScientistApplied Physical Sciences Corp (Aps) 2021 - PresentConcord, Massachusetts, United States -
Chief Scientist IiBae Systems 2004 - 2020Burlington, MassachusettsI led a team (2016 - 2019) for design, fabrication, integration and demonstration of an integrated x-ray transmission tomography and scanning electron microscope, with first light achieved in 2019, supporting 10 nm resolution. Work performed in support of the IARPA RAVEN program.I led a team (2016 - 2018) for the DARPA POSYDON program, defining the system concept and processing architecture for an acoustics-based undersea positioning capability i.e., ``undersea GPS'' for high accuracy, basin-scale navigation. -
Senior ScientistAlphatech Apr 2000 - Sep 2004Burlington, MaI led subcontractor team for passive towed array sonar detection and tracking of submarines inlittoral environments. Special areas of attention included environment estimation, high fidelityreplica field computation for matched field processing (MFP), use of ocean model covariance forenvironment robustness, and Doppler compensation over extended integration periods. The effortwas in support of the DARPA Robust Passive Sonar (RPS) program I served as PI for ONR award on synthetic aperture sonar for sea mine detection and classification.Served as PI for multiple NAVSEA awards on on active sonar detection of tethered sea mineswith special emphasis on rejection of environment clutter response.I wrote proposals, assembled teams, and served as PI for multiple Air Force Research Laboratory(AFRL) Phase I and II SBIR contracts. Topic areas included (i) radar- and EO-based automatictarget recognition (ATR) using model-based reasoning, (ii) radar-based GMTI tracking andhigh-range resolution (HRR) target classification, and performance prediction for target trackingand ATR incorporating physics and statistical noise models.

Senior GeophysicistGeometrics Oct 1994 - Mar 2000Golden, CoIn this role I grew and staffed a five-person research group, funded by numerous contract wins from SERDP, DOE, and the Gas Research Institute (GRI). The GRI award led to a successful commercial software product for optimal design of experiments for seismic oil and gas exploration. Work performed under the DOE award led to fundamental advances in the use of surface nuclear magnetic resonance for the exploration on subsurface water resources, and the publications remain the standard reference in the field. Research advanced performed under the SERDP contract awards enabled for the first time a high-fidelity, computationally fast algorithm for modeling electromagnetic scattering (both time and frequency domain) from realistic buried ordnance targets, necessary for efficient tomographic inversion.

Research AssociateCooperative Institute For Research In Environmental Sciences, University Of Colorado Oct 1993 - Oct 1994Boulder, CoI developed 3D tomographic inversion techniques for earth structure and taught a graduate level physics course in the Dept. of Physics (University of Colorado, Boulder).
-
Research AssociateDepartment Of Physics, University Of Colorado, Jan 1993 - Sep 1993Boulder, CoI developed coupled seismological and geodynamical techniques for tomographic inference of earth structure and mantle dynamics
-
Postdoctoral Fellow, Advanced Studies ProgramNational Center For Atmospheric Research Aug 1990 - Aug 1992Worked on solar physics problems including differential rotation and large-scale convection in the solar interior. Since then these techniques have been widely adopted and further developed by the astrophysical community.
