As president, I am responsible for all aspects of the Canadian business including investment strategy, product, business development, client relationships and operations. In 2019, I led the project to combine the operations of our global asset management business under the SLC Management brand.

In this role, I identified and pursued market-facing activities, within and across the various asset managers that comprise SLC Management. Key responsibilities: • The development of the strategic product platform based on the capabilities of the SLCM asset managers, market trends and SLCM strategic market objectives;• Built the strategic marketing of SLCM, including development of the brand and support for affiliate brands;• Built out and oversaw our consultant relations efforts;• Facilitated cross-selling activities and consultant relationships, as well as built presence in new market segments for SLCM companies.

I spearheaded the project to establish SLC Management (launched in October 2013). The impetus for the COO role was based on this project. My key responsibilities included: overseeing the firm's strategic marketing program; providing oversight on client service and reporting; driving new product development/product management; leading the development and maintenance of a robust control framework for the management of general operational risks; and overseeing the project management office.

I headed a global investment consulting team called the International Investment Centre. I was responsible for Sun Life’s relationships with third party investment managers, as well as wealth product solutions that incorporate investment funds. We also developed asset allocation solutions for Sun Life globally. While I was leading the team, we grew this business from the ground up to about $6B of asset allocation product solutions. We also partnered with global Sun Life product teams on early-stage wealth product development. A key accomplishment was globalization of the business. My team began to actively work with all of Sun Life’s businesses in Canada, US, UK and Asia. We also initiated a program called Global Preferred Partners to work more closely with a subset of strategically important global asset managers, in return for attractive service and fees for local Sun Life businesses.

Hong Kong

I led the strategic planning, product development, pricing, marketing and communications functions for Sun Life Hong Kong, an insurance company with HKD20B of assets. While in this role, I secured a five-year contract for Sun Life Hong Kong to extend its sponsorship of the Stanley Dragon Boat Festival, the largest in Hong Kong. The festival, with more than 100 teams paddling, was a tremendous event for Sun Life Hong Kong to build its local brand.

In addition to continuing with my responsibilities leading investments in Asia, I added leadership of SLF’s mutual fund and pension businesses in Asia. My primary accountability was working on business strategy with the Asian wealth businesses, primarily in Hong Kong, Philippines, India and China. I worked with MFS to setup a local office in Hong Kong during 2009, at a time where we were looking to leverage MFS' brand for our broader asset management initiatives. I was also very involved in helping reposition our Indian asset management company. After returning to Canada in 2010, I was asked to remain on the asset management investment committee.

Hong Kong

I moved to Hong Kong to become Head of Investments for Sun Life Asia. Leading our insurance and asset management investment teams in China, Hong Kong, Philippines, India and Indonesia, my primary role was to provide leadership oversight and support. I set the regional investment strategy and oversaw implementation of each country’s investment programs. In addition, I was a member of various regional and country risk management and pension committees.

As the leader of the public bond team, I was responsible for a $20B bond and money market portfolio. The mandates within the portfolio included total return bond, asset-liability matched bond, repo matched book and money market liquidity pool. I was accountable for fund performance, portfolio composition, and yield curve and duration positioning. I continued to manage the Sun Life Participating Life portfolio and Clarica Participating Life Portfolio, two total return bond funds with assets totaling over $5B. I represented the investments area on the UK Pension Investment Sub-Committee, responsible for asset mix and strategy decisions for its defined benefit pension plan.During my time leading the team, performance was strong and all our total return portfolios beat their respective benchmarks over all time frames.

As a Fixed Income Portfolio Manager, I was part of a team managing a $17B bond portfolio following the 2002 merger with insurance company Clarica. As PM, I participated in portfolio management strategy setting, including recommending portfolio strategies and executing trades. I was the lead manager for the Sun Life Participating Life portfolio ($1.6B), Clarica Participating Life Portfolio ($3.5B) and Sun Life Pension Bond Fund ($300M), responsible for their performance. I set the sector mix, desired duration and term weightings of the portfolios.

Following my previous role, I was promoted to Manager of the Trading Desk where I supervised the financial market coverage and analytic work of the traders. I also organized and presented seminars on Bank policy and operations.While only in this role for a short time, I co-authored a research paper on the overnight funding market in Canada that was published in the Bank of Canada Quarterly Review. Though overnight funding was an important topic for the Bank of Canada, it had never published on it before.

Working in the Financial Markets Department, I was part of a team that worked closely with fixed income traders at financial institutions. Our role was to assess the outlook for financial markets by interacting with traders and portfolio managers about international and domestic market developments, Bank of Canada policy and trading activity. Based on those conversations, I would regularly brief senior Bank officials, including the Governor. I recommended and conducted open market operations in the treasury bill and overnight financing markets.The early 1990s were an interesting time to work in monetary policy - large government deficits, Quebec separation concerns, weak dollar - and therefore this experience with a good base for my later roles managing fixed income portfolios and interest rate anticipation.
