About Eugene Mccarthy
Funded through the Marie Curie fellowship scheme, I received my PhD in 2006 from the Institute of Science Technology and Medicine at Keele University, UK. The primary focus of my PhD research was the identification and characterisation of novel acute phase inflammatory molecules as biomarkers in lower vertebrates. Following my PhD I carried out a one year research fellowship at the National Diagnostic Centre in NUIG. In 2007, I was appointed as Senior Researcher in GMIT at the Applied Resarch Enhancement Shelltec Centre. Through various Enterprise Ireland capital equipment grants I have developed a core proteomic research facility at GMIT. In 2010, I was appointed Senior Researcher and Centre leader of the Galway Medical Technologies Centre (GMedTech). I have developed a number of industry focussed research programmes in GMIT which are aligned to the needs of both the MedTech and Marine sectors. in 2016, I successfully secured Technology Gateway funding from Enterprise Ireland to establish the Medical and Engineering Technologies Gateway at GMIT.

Senior Researcher and Centre leader of the Galway Medical Technologies Centre (GMedTech). As well as been actibvely involved in research, I was responsible for managing and directing a number of both state and industry funded research programmes within GMIT.

Under the research centre’s remit, developed research programme focussing on the elucidating of biomarkers from both the stress and immune response in commercial valuable crustacean species. Profiling for biomarkers is carried out using various proteomic and molecular techniques, including liquid chromatography and 2D gel electrophoresis.

Research project ‘A Functional Genomics Approach to Measuring Stress in Fish Aquaculture’. Duties include cell culture, transfection studies, reporter assays and RNA isolation from tissue, cDNA synthesis, and examining differential gene expression using Real-time PCR.
