Funded by Enterprise Ireland, The Medical and Engineering Technologies (MET) Gateway Centre is part of nationwide network of 15 Technology Gateways (www.technologygateway.ie) whose role is to deliver technology solutions close to the market needs of Irish industry. The MET Gateway is an open access point for industry to relevant expertise both in GMIT and the entire Gateway network, providing access to all of the technology offering of the entire Network to companies in the region. The Medical and Engineering Technologies (MET) Gateway Centre is an interdisciplinary technology centre providing world class solutions for SMEs and larger organisations across the Medtech and general manufacturing sectors. Based at GMIT’s Galway campus, the Gateway offers a range of technologies relevant to companies in the product engineering and design application phase.MET engages with industry partners via several platforms:- Contract research / development- Short term projects to develop solutions to specific problems or develop clearly identified technologies.- Commercialisation of MET developed technology offerings- Long term development projects with industry partners to investigate innovative technologies / materials with identified industrial applications.

Senior Researcher and Centre leader of the Galway Medical Technologies Centre (GMedTech). As well as been actibvely involved in research, I was responsible for managing and directing a number of both state and industry funded research programmes within GMIT.

Under the research centre’s remit, developed research programme focussing on the elucidating of biomarkers from both the stress and immune response in commercial valuable crustacean species. Profiling for biomarkers is carried out using various proteomic and molecular techniques, including liquid chromatography and 2D gel electrophoresis.

Research project ‘A Functional Genomics Approach to Measuring Stress in Fish Aquaculture’. Duties include cell culture, transfection studies, reporter assays and RNA isolation from tissue, cDNA synthesis, and examining differential gene expression using Real-time PCR.
