Several years ago, when Law Bulletin Publishing Company named Gene Murphy to its annual “40 Under 40” list of 40 outstanding young Illinois lawyers, they quoted from one nomination that said: “His skills as both a civil and criminal trial lawyer are extraordinary, and are those of a litigator well beyond his age.” Gene is a little older now, and has since been named a “Leading Lawyer” in Chicago Lawyer’s Top Lawyers of Illinois listing. But the same idea holds true: he is a tough, smart trial lawyer.Since graduating from Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1987, Gene has worked in every kind of public and private legal practice, serving as a trial lawyer and supervising other trial attorneys. His record of accomplishment is long and impressive:•Fresh out of law school he worked in the General Counsel’s office at Arthur Andersen, advising global businesses on transactions and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.•For over nine years as Assistant State’s Attorney at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, he prosecuted financial crime, fraud, and racketeering cases against corporate executives and business owners, union and government officials, and organized crime figures.•He headed the litigation practice at two Chicago-area litigation boutiques, and in 2004 went to the Chicago office of Bryan Cave – one of the 35 largest law firms in the world – as a commercial litigation partner.Gene has extensive experience representing publicly held companies, private businesses, and government entities, having taken over fifty jury trials and hundreds of bench trials to verdict. He has conducted and supervised corporate internal investigations for “Fortune 100” companies, closely held corporations and partnerships, and several Chicago-area municipalities.
