Profile bio

About Eugene B. Shirley, Jr.

I've spent the whole of my life helping people with big ideas turn their best ones into real-world projects. Now I'm helping young people do the same thing and build a better future. For 25 yrs my projects were in documentary film, starting off with a focus on human rights in the USSR. Selected honors included a Royal Television Society win for best documentary series, a BAFTA nomination, and a White House premiere. I then left documentaries to found a tech company with my computer scientist-husband. After a decade, I left that to found a 501(c)3 organization with my favorite professor from grad school (we just celebrated our 10th birthday as an organization). In college/grad school, it was a passion for justice that motivated me to pull together a documentary film to throw light on the human rights abuse of religious believers in the USSR. Produced in collaboration with Keston College, UK, I was the first American to film in the Soviet Union. "Candle in the Wind" was broadcast worldwide, with accompanying book.As the USSR collapsed I pulled together a PBS/BBC 4-part series on the cold war with a history professor from the University of WA and a journalist-producer from BBC that aired in 30 countries. With Andy Tobias, Jane Bryant Quinn, Nobel laureate Bill Sharpe and others I made an 8-part series on the big ideas of the world's leading investors. With former Asst. Sec. of Education Chester E. Finn, Jr. we looked at big ideas in education. With China's opening, I examined the tension between modernity and tradition with architect I.M. Pei and academics in the field. With specialists in tech and finance, I helped launched an early AI firm. We hoped to make a contribution in education but didn't land there; we did in finance. Today the NY-based company delivers the "gold standard" of sentiment data for investors. In 2014 I moved to the non-profit world to found Pando with philosophical theologian John B. Cobb Jr. Pando unites diverse higher ed institutions from across SoCal to help meet agreed upon goals for the common good -- and actually make them happen. It is a broad experiment in civic engagement that is grounded in practical outcomes and the collaborative action of young people.I've worked in profit and non-profit, and raised project funding from investors, business, foundations, private sources, and public agencies globally. I work well across the aisle. For 2 years I was a Jennings Randolph Fellow at U.S. Institute of Peace, WA, D.C.

Listed skills include Entrepreneurship, Editing, Research, Public Speaking, and 10 others.

Los Angeles, Us

Pando is a non-profit working in the education industry, producing civic engagement programs that focus on building resilience in the California Southland. I founded Pando in 2014 with American Academy of Arts and Sciences member John B. Cobb, Jr. (my former professor, tracing back 40 years) and others interested in rethinking civilization with the Earth and each other in mind. Our flagship Pando Days program brings Southland colleges and universities together to create ingenious new initiatives to help implement the LA County sustainability plan. By the end of 2022, we expect more than three dozen Pando Days projects to have been developed, the result of full courses, studios or labs devoted to this purpose. Former Chief Sustainability Officer for LA County Gary Gero serves as the Pando Days Key Advisor. Our Magenta House Expo and Accelerator operate on a similar model but for middle school. With LA City Councilmember Paul Koretz and Caltech CSO John Onderdonk, we founded the CSO (Chief Sustainability Officer) Taskforce for LA County, bringing together CSOs from higher ed, business, and government.Pando gets its name from the one-tree forest in south-central Utah that spreads over 100 acres with more than 47,000 trunks -- yet stems from the same root. It is a profound symbol of the interconnectedness of all things.

I co-founded Alexandria with Chief Scientist Ruey-Lung Hsiao, PhD. The company has become the gold standard of text analytics for finance, awarded AFTA's best "AI Technology Initiative" in finance for 2021.Our original focus was in the knowledge management and information visualization space with the aim of creating an advanced learning system for educators and learners alike. But groundbreaking work in machine learning and data analytics opened up opportunities to tailor applications for institutional investors. The company has grown to become a leading provider of sentiment assessment for the financial industry, with facility in multiple languages. The company serves a global client base from offices in New York and Los Angeles. Alexandria operates in the arena of predictive analytics, helping finance professionals discover intelligence within massive amounts of unstructured content. We do it with technology that can read and understand qualitative information -- identifying facts, assessing sentiment, and delivering integrated market intelligence -- within milliseconds. Nov 2007 - Mar 2015

Founding President

Pacem Productions

I founded PACEM when I was in college to produce a documentary film on human rights in the Soviet Union: CANDLE IN THE WIND. Narrated by John Carradine and directed by Arthur Barron, the film was the first major production in the US to focus on the history of oppression of Soviet believers. It aired over PBS and in 24 other countries, premiering at the White House for International Human Rights Day following a speech by President Reagan. I was the first US independent producer to film officially in the USSR. I also co-edited CANDLE IN THE WIND, the book, with Keston College scholar Michael Rowe. The last PACEM film was the American Masters' special, I.M. PEI: Building China Modern, filmed with Pei over 8 years in the 2,500 year-old city of Suzhou. Caroline Courtauld co-executive produced; Anne Makepeace directed; Charles Jencks played a key role. Over the years, PACEM was the producing entity for projects that I initiated and developed with colleagues, including: MESSENGERS FROM MOSCOW, a 4-part series on the Cold War (PBS and BBC) written and directed by Daniel Wolf and executive produced in collaboration with Wolf and Prof. Herbert Ellison, nominated for a British "Oscar" (BAFTA) and winning a "best documentary" British "Emmy" (Royal Television Society award); YELSTIN, a 90-min special; BEYOND WALL STREET, an 8-part series on finance with journalists Andrew Tobias and Jane Bryant Quinn and co-directed with the legendary Michael Gill; and A.K.A. CREEK: Educating a Big City Schoolboy, a public television special with former Asst. Sec. of Education Chester E. Finn, Jr. PACEM's work was supported internationally, including government and private institutions in the US (foundations, corporations, CPB, NEA, NEH, and ITVS, and others). PACEM's films have been broadcast in prime time including to some thirty countries. Collaborating partners included WNET/New York, WETA/Washington, D.C., SCETV/Columbia, SC, Barraclough Carey/London, Malone Gill/London, and more.
