Substitute Teacher
Student Teacher
I taught 7th and 8th grade students at Bancroft Middle School in Long Beach, California. I had two master teachers who guided me become a competent teacher. There was also had an additional student teacher under my master teachers and together we were able to co-plan lessons, observed each other, and provide feedbacks to each other so that we were able to improve much faster than other student teachers. My master teachers gave me a great amount of freedom in the classroom so I was able to start teaching all three of my classes from the first day of school with my own lesson plan. I believe students can learn better when they feel safe in the classroom, which is immediately related to the relationship between them and the classroom teacher. In order to create an effective learning environment, I focused on building a community throughout the semester. I greeted students at the door, treated them as intellectuals, communicated with their families often, and went to events and games that my students participated in. My other focus was the gamification of learning. Students can learn more effectively when they enjoy learning so I created educational games and modified existing games for my lessons. My students enjoyed various types of games, such as True/False (diagnostic assessment), Fly Swatter (vocabulary building), Arabian Caravan (content learning), and Grudgeball (study guide). My top priority as an educator is the long-term impact on students’ intellectual growth, rather than cramming temporary knowledge that would be disposed of after an exam. History as a discipline requires learners to investigate historical events by reading and comparing multiple sources and developing their own opinions using supporting evidence. This disciplinary approach not only better aligns with Common Core, but also is a more meaningful way to grow intellectually for students because it requires a deeper understanding of content by using higher thinking and literacy skills.
