About Eva Kathleen Schulte, Cap®

I serve as executive director of Friends of the San Juans. I've dedicated my career to work in the social sector and my experience spans foundations, non-profits, higher education, and purpose driven businesses. I'm committed to environmental conservation and systemic change that protects people and our planet. I steward nine figures in net assets, fund growth, and major gifts, and award strategic funds in priority communities to improve the natural and human environment. I'm a designer of innovative programs and organizational systems. I lead the development of philanthropic causes and impact management that secures Certified B Corporation®️ status and wins overall Best for the World™ recognition (2019) for business outcomes that meet the highest top 5% of social and environmental impact. I develop strategic frameworks to raise and structure new impact investment funds backed by federal loan guarantees and regularly track impact through platinum ratings on Candid.Through collaborative civic initiatives, I support the advancement of strategic communications and policy wins in renewable energy, climate resilience, and corporate and investor support for diverse communities. Coalitions I lead cross public and social sectors and together, we win the Robert Wood Johnson Culture of Health Prize for Kansas City. I am highly experienced in budgeting for and scaling learning through strategic summits and knowledge management, i.e. Impact Investing Summit at the Kauffman Foundation.I have lived and worked in five countries and am deeply rooted in communities. I began my career supporting job training and environmental health with migrant farmworkers in Iowa. My contributions span the Pacific NW, CA Bay Area, Midwest, and as far as Rwanda, Africa. I align funding and organizations to realize goals and build learning cultures within organizations and teams I supervise, ranging from 10-50 people. I love to play on land and water. I’m into rock gardening, hiking, Tai- Chi, green boating and exploring the Salish Sea and San Juan Islands archipelago by paddle board with my spouse, 10 year-old daughter and Portuguese water dog, Chewie.

    As Executive Director, Eva led the advancement of Whatcom Community College Foundation. Eva raised philanthropic support and in collaboration with the Foundation Board, stewarded $18 million in net assets, plus planned giving, investments, and fixed assets—the Foundation Building and Health Professions Education Center. Under Eva's leadership the Foundation increased fundraising by 76%, successfully completed a multi-million-dollar campaign, and recruited 245 new and major donors during the global health pandemic. Eva managed all budgeting and distribution of Foundation funds to drive innovation, and social equity on campus through excellence grants, and oversaw the financial allocation and awarding of all student scholarships. Eva recruited ambassadors and developed and managed civic engagement programs for alumni to prepare students for active citizenship in a global society. Eva led strategic direction for institutional advancement through overseeing the Communications and Marketing department and community affairs. As a member of the president's cabinet, Eva worked to advance the nationally recognized community college with 10,000 students and 500 employees and successfully transitioned departments to virtual, online engagement during the global health pandemic. WCC achieved success for students by building community, enhancing effectiveness, and advancing equity. Eva guided workforce community outreach, web refresh, social/brand promotion, and strategic funding for enrollment and retention. Eva worked with teams to structure staff departments to facilitate learning cultures and assessments, and addressed budget constraints, which resulted in efficiencies that recaptured 25% of budget.
