About Evalyn (Eva) Knowles
Language learning, teaching, and intercultural education as a means to grow and strengthen transnational communities and cultural competency.I have ample experience in the non-profit and public service sector, stemming from my year of volunteer service with AmeriCorps NCCC, FEMA Corps. Since my service year, I have worked directly with notable organizations such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the American Red Cross. After completing my study abroad year at the University of Vigo (Galicia, Spain) where I studied Spanish, Gallego, Portuguese, and Italian in the faculty of translation and phonology, I have served in a position as a Study Abroad advisor with the Center of International Education at Loyola University New Orleans to share my enthusiasm for exchange. I have since participated for the second time in the Critical Language Scholarship for Portuguese in Brazil and returned to Galicia to teach English with the Fulbright Program. As a graduate from a Jesuit institution, I think that service learning and social justice in academia are important aspects of a well-rounded education; my experience working as a research assistant for The Visiting Room culminates my advocacy towards exploring the intersections of higher education and social service. Moreover, my senior research, examining pan-ethnic Hispanic identity at an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (EHSI) and through linguistic traditions in collegiate settings brings to the forefront a public conversation about linguistic identity to foster transcultural understanding and institutional change.
Listed skills include Event Planning, Leadership, Microsoft Office, Teamwork, and 13 others.
