About Evalaurene Jean-Charles

I began my full time teaching career in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic after two years of part-time teaching experience at the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES) as a high school equivalency teacher, and in the John Jay Honors Program as a peer mentor. These experiences solidified my commitment to a career in education and my decision to apply and later be accepted to Teach for America. Through the program I began teaching as a special educator at Urban Dove Team Charter School II, a transfer high school in the South Bronx.I moved on to teach at South Bronx Community Charter High School as a lead 9th grade history teacher. After one year I was promoted to the head the history department where I began building my experience as a teacher leader in charge of maintaining vertical alignment and the use of best practices for a student-centered, culturally responsive, and project based classroom. I have since transitioned to head of the humanities department at Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School continuing to hone my teaching and educator support practices, which has solidified my commitment to educator development and support.Throughout my time in the classroom, inspired by my true belief in the need to enhance access to quality education in communities of color, I started a platform that highlights the deep importance of providing students a voice to co-create the education system. Building Black on Black Education has helped me develop my training and facilitation skills through my various speaking engagements and the development of the Teacher Action Board, an online community committed to supporting educators in building and maintaining equitable, joyous, and high quality classrooms. My passion for equitable education drives me to support educators in maintaining their commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences for all students. Let's connect and collaborate on creating transformative educational environments.
