As an experienced member of the ship. I provide expert knowledge and understanding of the ship's systems for coordination of the ship's engineered refuel and overhaul. Working with experienced test engineers and project managers to ensure safe maintenance and overhaul of the ship is performed. My primary job is to ensure that ship's complex nuclear and mechanical systems are in a safe condition to perform maintenance, preventing severe injury to personnel and extensive damage to equipment. I am also responsible for planning the maintenance to be performed and coordinating between the Navy's work force and the work force of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to ensure time sensitive work is accomplished in a rapid and efficient, but safe manner.

Nuclear Machinist Mates (mechanics) provide propulsion for the ship, maintaining the propulsion plant and the reactor plant in a safe and operating condition. Mechanics have an in depth understanding and operational experience of steam, water, oil, and many other types of systems. Equipment examples are steam turbines, pumps, valves, oil purifiers, pressure reducers, refrigeration/air conditioning plants, desalination machines, etc. When the ship is not operational such as in port, mechanics endure vigorous work hours to accomplish all necessary tasks to restore the ship to its full operational status. Including replacing vital parts for machinery, overhauling valves, machining parts, and performing many other types of corrective and preventative maintenance. While the reactor plant is operational, mechanics are the primary workforce of the propulsion plant. Providing exceptional knowledge and operational skills to operate complex machinery to maintain the ship's propulsion to ensure the safety of the entire ship to carry out the ship's strategic mission.

Following Naval Nuclear Power School, MMs, EMs and ETs begin prototype training in their rating specialty at one of two Nuclear Power.

The three-month Machinist’s Mate (MM) course in Charleston, S.C., provides a basic knowledge of technical mathematics and understanding.
