My passion and career focus has been the development, application, validation and commercialization of innovative in situ remediation and redox-sensitive technologies. Projects I direct encompass a wide variety of techniques, including enhanced bioremediation, chemical oxidation, chemical reduction, and electrokinetically-enhanced versions thereof.My focus has tended towards emerging contaminants, initially with chlorinated solvents (they were once considered emerging), followed since by perchlorate, NDMA, 1,4-dioxane, and more recently sulfolane, chlorendic acid, and PFAS. I also love solving complex remediation problems related to redox-sensitive metals within mining and manufacturing industries. As one of the originators of the Gravel Bed Reactor (GBR) technology in 2005 to treat metals and inorganics, I am particularly excited to see a resurgence in the use of this technology to help mining companies address challenging issues related to selenium in surface waters.I am particularly proud of having helped to pioneer the now common practice of bioaugmentation for chlorinated solvents, having worked with academic partners to isolate KB-1 from an old contaminated site here in southern Ontario, followed by validation of its capabilities at early test sites in the United States, Canada and Scandinavia. KB-1, sold by SiREM, has been applied around the world.
