About Evan Bailey

How do cells know where to go and what to do during the embryonic development of organisms? This question is at the heart of my current research work as a final year PhD candidate at the Queensland Brain Institute, where I study the processes by which mammals construct their brains during development.I am particularly interested in the process of 'neurogenesis' - the production of neurons from stem cells in the brain. Whilst there has been a lot of research on how neurons are produced in mice, not much is known about how these processes have evolved in mammals more broadly.Using a variety of molecular and cellular biology techniques, genetic manipulation of developmental processes, and single-cell bioinformatics (scRNA-seq) in mice and a similarly sized marsupial, my PhD work has uncovered key differences in how different clades of mammals build their brains. More broadly, these findings relate differences in brain development to inter-species differences in the developmental environment. My appreciation for molecular and cellular neuroscience was developed as an Honours student studying gene therapy approaches to improve the effectiveness of Cochlear implants. This was followed by my work as a Research Assistant at UNSW where I assisted a team examining neuronal plasticity in brain stem neurons in response to a chronic environmental stressor (hypercapnia or elevated CO2).As a computationally minded biologist (R, Python and BASH/UNIX shell), I leverage a variety of analytical tools and techniques from Data Science (machine learning and advanced statistics) in answering biological questions relating to cellular growth and decision making. You can find out more about me and my work here: https://biomedical-sciences.uq.edu.au/profile/16260/evan-bailey
