It all started with hip hop—a revelation I only recently deciphered. My passion for social justice seems to have sprouted from the poignant lyrics of artists like Common, Kanye West, Mos Def, and Nas. When I was 10, Kanye’s words echoed through the radio and painted a picture of a world unknown to me: “Where I'm from the dope boys is the rock stars/But they can't cop cars without seeing cop cars/I guess they want us all behind bars - I know it.” Beats and bars unveiled a life of struggle and strife, a reality—to my surprise—I would someday intimately understand.Years later, what had been a distant observation transformed into a deeply personal journey. While I had previously navigated through choppy waters, chronic illness careened me off course, leaving me marooned on an island with no visible shipping lanes for rescue: a state of profound and prolonged solitude. But struggle often endures—even Odysseus stayed with Calypso for seven years—and my toiling eventually clarified my vision, solidifying a passion for advocacy and amplifying the stories and struggles that hip-hop had whispered to me years earlier. And so, with a newfound vigor, I had at last found a way to signal a ship and navigate homeward.In March 2020, I joined the emerging leadership team of Three Rivers Restorative Justice, with a mission to heal the wounds of those harmed by criminal offenses. I then graduated from Arizona State University in 2021, proudly earning dual degrees in Justice Studies and Political Science, summa cum laude. Come 2022, I spearheaded the development of a new statewide initiative at The Arc Minnesota, forging a path towards fundamental inclusion for people with disabilities. Now, armed with an M.S. in Program Evaluation and Data Analytics from Arizona State, I deploy data as a potent tool to uplift the lives of the marginalized.I stand steadfast in the belief that every individual is born with an inherent dignity and embodies a light far brighter than their darkest day. It is my deepest hope to guide the world toward peace, benevolence, and justice—this time, with bytes rather than beats as my guiding rhythm.
