During my time at SCM I worked on two projects: A darkening cabin designed to house a magnetic particle inspection machine and a "pipe crawler" system.For the darkening cabin, I was privileged enough to have worked under the CEO, Mr. Philippe Rubbers, who entrusted me with the role of lead design engineer and overall project manager with occasional guidance at critical stages of development. For the "pipe crawler", a second intern and I shared these responsibilities.The darkening cabin project was to build a pneumatically controlled retractable roof cabin built for covering a Karl-Deutsch “Deutroflux Deutromat Magnetpulver-Rissprufung an Eisenbahnkomponenten” machine. The cabin was to be made for SWASAP, a manufacturer of train wheels and axles based in Germiston, Gauteng. The machine clamps train axles and delivers a magnetic flux onto the axle to reveal cracks or other imperfections under UV lights which might be present after manufacturing.For this project, I had to design the cabin structure, the retractable roof along with the housing of three pneumatic cylinders. I was put in charge of a workshop team who constructed my design, which was based on an existing structure at SWASAP. The open roof allows train axles to be lowered onto the machine for magnetic particle inspection. The cabin has special protective curtains around its perimeter to shield workers from ultraviolet radiation from the UV lights mounted on the cabin roof. The roof must close before inspection to cover the entrance with the same protective curtains. The design was completed within the required time frame and well under budget.
