The role of the site engineer comprises of three prominent phases per project/site. This includes, but is not limited to; the design phase, the implementation which is generally followed up with the support function phase. In the design phase the industrial engineer forms part of planning the solution that is agreed upon and which is in accordance to the customers expectations. This includes the formulating of the design horizon forecasts, design of the facility layout, the racking and bin configuration, ergonomic shop floor equipment, new process documentation and resource planning. At the implementation phase the site engineer works closely together with the operations team to ensure the facilities cut-over list is implemented as per the project plan's deadlines. These responsibilities range from loading master data into the warehouse management system, ensuring suppliers adhere to the signed off layout designs, required system configurations are in place and all the necessary system integrations are working between client ERP and the warehouse management system. Part of the implementation is also to ensure the warehouse processes are aligned to the process design documents. After successfully handing over the project to the operations team, the site engineer is to ensure the technical engineer on site is fully equipped to address daily operations and system issues. The warehouse performance indicators should meet the customer service level agreements. This is highly reliant on industrial engineering techniques to be implemented for continuously improving the performances of all processes within the warehouse/facility.

The role of the combined responsibilities of the continues improvement engineer and inventory control supervisor was specifically intended to develop robust and sustainable inventory control processes and also expose the engineer to supervisor duties and responsibilities. This enabled the engineer to drive and implement new processes to uphold the overall service level agreement KPI's relevant to the inventory processes with the client. The Japanese KATA improvement methodology was utilized to identify process inefficiencies and obstacles which was discussed in daily GEMBA meetings with the shop floor employees. Other duties involved attending weekly buyer and product managers meeting. Assist in yearly Inventory accuracy audits and ensure the required 99.95% stock accuracy standard was achieved. Also assist with buyer stock queries as and when required. Drive weekly stock balancing reports to ensure accurate ERP and WMS stock holding levels. Take part in detail stock movement investigations and present outcomes to management. Supervise the inventory team and provide daily task's and directives to ensure proactive inventory control activities are in place. Relevant process KPI's and activity KPI's updated per week or per day, depending on the required frequency, and communicated to the relevant stakeholders. Support in adhoc projects as requested from the warehouse manager or general manager, respectively, and provide progress reports up until completion.

The planning supervisor oversees the planning department’s activities and is responsible for continuously maintaining the detail production plan. Attend weekly meetings, with promotion specialist's and managers, to discuss campaign status's and provide alternative production plan scenarios to reduce overall risk of overtime and missing deadlines (Usually for critical campaign launches within the national regions). Furthermore, it is the planning supervisor responsibility to keep track of supplier deliveries and ensuring that campaign's with outstanding line items get flagged and escalated to relevant stakeholders. Lastly, warehouse performance KPI’s and courier OTIF (on time in full) performance’s to be compiled each month and reported to the client and management.

The planning specialist is responsible for all activities related to facilitating the forecasting, planning and execution of successful campaigns, in accordance to the production schedule requirements. Regular forecasting of accurate packaging material to accommodate a lean stock holding model and mitigating packaging shortages that could result in production down time. Conducting motion and time studies for specialized kit requirement to calculate accurate production lead times for each customer specific campaign. Big promotional campaigns accommodated by progress KPI's frequently published to operations ensuring that the actual kit rate does not fall behind the planned rate. Finally, it is required from the planning specialist to have a hands-on approach to improve any production line deficiencies in cases where production lines fall behind the required rate.
