I am currently working on a self-directed California housing policy research project for SIEPR's California Policy Research Initiative (CAPRI). My current project is titled "Peninsula Cities" and revolves around demographic and land-use patterns that exist throughout the different cities that make up the San Francisco Bay Area's Peninsula. My project will map out and analyze geospatial and census data of the land-uses and demographics, demonstrating that each Peninsula City has three distinct zones - affluent single-family neighborhoods in the west, a denser and more transit rich downtown along the El Camino and Caltrain corridor, and less affluent and more racially diverse neighborhoods as well as industrial uses in the east of the city. I will then use this zones theory of these city to create housing and land-use policy recommendations for each zone.

Washington Dc-Baltimore Area

I am assisting primarily with a project seeking to enhance the accessibility and usability of HUD programs by sorting through, categorizing, and helping to write up recommendations based upon a recent request for information. I will also be assisting with a project that is examining what guaranteed income pilots around the country are teaching us about housing.

My primary tasks revolved around a Billington Lab survey project that is examining public perceptions of affordable housing. I assisted with this project by completing R code to visualize all of the survey data utilizing all sorts of different data visualization techniques, such as basic bar charts for more basic demographic information to more complex parallel line or color coded scatter plots for charts that needed to include more than 2 variables. I also proofread the survey and made some minor edits in Qualtrics. Utilizing my public policy background, I also undertook tasks that would help the lab to understand how their work on improving the built environment could be used for better housing and land-use policy. As a result, I created a 10 page California housing policy guide that detailed the current state of California's housing crisis, the causes of the crisis, and the steps that the state is taking to alleviate the crisis. I also assisted with another paper that was, among many things, interested in the ways that the federal government was creating subsidized housing that was not traditional public housing. To help, I created a flow chart of different ways that the federal, state, and local governments provide grant, loan, and tax credit assistance to affordable housing developer. This was created through a combination of online research and an interview that was conducted with an affordable housing developer.

San Francisco Bay Area

As a political affairs intern, I supported HAC's Political Organizing team with a wide range of tasks to help with their mission of advocating for more housing in the Bay Area. I primarily supported by writing sample letters and helping to facilitate letter writing campaigns, examining and writing reports about housing elements, writing reports on proposed housing developments, and phone banking. I also completed a capstone project which examined paths towards creating higher density and more affordable housing in resource rich neighborhoods. This project was completed through thorough research on the existing literature and best policy practices as well as through stakeholder interviews and culminated in a capstone to the HAC staff.

As a research assistant, I worked on various survey research projects that require a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Our primary project required us to aggregate climate change public opinion survey data from numerous national surveys from the last decade and analyze the apparent discrepancies in public opinion that the different surveys show. For this project, I analyzed survey question wording differences and designing survey experiments to test whether wording changes are responsible for these discrepancies. As lab scheduler, I am responsible for leading the undergraduate research team of PPRG. This primarily consists of keeping track of everyone's schedule, delegating tasks, and monitoring the team's work.
