Chief Executive OfficerVirridy Jan 2012 - PresentBoulder, Colorado, UsGlobally, billions face water insecurity and water quality challenges. Water is an under-invested sector facing increasing pressure from climate change.Carbon credit markets provide incentives for nature-based climate solutions, but lack project diversity and quality. At this intersection, Virridy brings Freshwater Decarbonization With Data Science. -
Associate ProfessorOregon Health And Science University Sep 2017 - Aug 2018Portland, Oregon, UsI was faculty in the Oregon Health & Science University, Portland State University School of Public Health. -
Associate ProfessorPortland State University May 2016 - Aug 2018Portland, Or, UsI was a Associate Professor at Portland State University and the Oregon Health and Science University in the School of Public Health, and the College of Engineering. I established the Sustainable Water, Energy and Environmental Technologies Laboratory (SweetLab, www.sweetlab.org). Our research group develops and implements "Internet of Things" sensor technologies designed to improve the collection of, and action on, data in global health programs. We deploy and study high efficiency cookstoves, water pumps, household water filters, sanitation systems, pedestrian footbridges and other appropriate technologies. We also work in remote sensing and drone research, developing and conducting autonomous environmental impact assessments domestically and internationally with satellite and drone-derived imagery. Remote sensing analysis has enabled us to increase data collection in data-scarce regions in developing countries, allowing us and our partners to actively respond to environmental and human health risks including deforestation and air and water quality measures. Our research and practice has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the World Bank, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the United Nations Foundation, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Kingdom Department for International Development (UK DFID), the Gates Foundation, and others.I developed and taught courses including ME410/510 “International Sustainable Development” offered to engineering, business and public health students, ME 370 “The Mechanical Engineering Profession”, ME121, “Introduction to Systems and Control”, ME122 “Introduction to Design and Production”, ME 411, "Instrumentation and Measurement". Faculty Fellow, Institute for Sustainable Solutions. -

Chief Operating Officer, Delagua HealthDelagua Group Mar 2012 - Dec 2016Marlborough, Wiltshire, GbComplementing my faculty work, I am also a social business entrepreneur engaged in global health and technology programs. From 2012 through 2016, I was Chief Operating Officer of DelAgua Health. In this capacity, I was responsible for conceptualizing, designing and operating a $25 million dollar nationwide public health intervention in Rwanda in partnership with the Government of Rwanda (www.delagua.org/projects/rwanda). Our program has to-date reached over 1.6 million people across over 350,000 households with cookstoves, and 102,000 of these households with water filters. The program was operational in over 7,500 villages. Over two years, our program design demonstrated a 46% reduction in the prevalence of diarrhea in children under 5, a 73% reduction indoor air pollution when behavior change messaging is implemented, and a nearly 28% reduction in personal exposure to particulate matter. Epidemiologically derived estimates on morbidity and mortality impact suggest over a hundred averted deaths in children under 5 each year, and 6,000 averted disability-adjusted life-years every year the program maintains similar performance.I was the primary focal point for all of our partners, including negotiations with the Government of Rwanda through several ministries, our health impact randomized control trial run through Portland State in cooperation with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Oregon Health and Science University and Emory University, our carbon credit buyers including the World Bank and the Swedish government, our investors, and the public. -
Executive Vice PresidentManna Energy Limited May 2007 - Sep 2013GbIn 2007 I co-founded the social enterprise Manna Energy Limited. I developed a novel business model to adapt the United Nations carbon credit market into funding household and community water treatment in developing countries. In 2011, we took this concept to scale in Kenya, contracted to the the water filter manufacturer Vestergaard Frandsen to help deploy nearly 900,000 household water filters to 4.5 million people. In 2013, the UK water test kit company DelAgua acquired my company. Founding executive. Responsible for the direction of the company’s humanitarian ventures, including establishing and directing water treatment and energy provisioning efforts in rural Rwanda, and fuel briquetting in rural Afghanistan, funded by United Nations Carbon Emission Reductions Credits.Coordinated development of first UN carbon credit project worldwide ever to claim credits for the treatment of drinking water; first carbon credit project in Rwanda.Lead board member for technology development and deployment plan. Implementing program to install water treatment, rainwater catchment, biogas and improved cookstove systems across Rwanda. Program includes methods and technologies to provide sustainable and clean sources of water and energy. Systems are self-funded by carbon credits and allow for the maintenance and expansion of the program.Co-inventor of in-line water treatment system design, developed and implemented continuous surface water treatment allowing the switch from non renewable biomass for thermal treatment of drinking water. Lead engineer for UV water treatment system and remote monitoring subsystem. -
