I lead several teams of engineers who build and operate the platform that runs BigQuery Omni on AWS and Azure. This is a real Google service running in a real multi-cloud deployment using all of the things you'd expect - Kubernetes, Terraform, VPCs, identity federation, performance and cost optimization, and spend management. In this role I manage other managers, senior ICs, and TLs, as well as several dotted-line reports that bring domain-specific knowledge (e.g. RDMA networking expertise) required to build the platform BigQuery needs. In addition to platform engineering, I own budget and finance for the product including forecasting and spend optimization across AWS, Azure, and GCP.

* I deferred medical school (accepted to the University of New Mexico ‘05) to pursue this career opportunity. I liked it so much I never looked back.* Designed, built, and deployed clinical sample management system for the institute’s malaria vaccine study in Morogoro, TZ. Due to unreliable power and Internet, EC2 and S3 were adopted for data storage and processing while the UI was deployed onsite to laptops with UPS.* The system met FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements and served the 4-year study from 2007-2011. My scope was end-to-end and included AWS components,the Java (Swing) UI running on the client, and security and compliance.* This experience and success motivated a move to AWS to help build the products I’d used successfully at the Center.

I also ran the physical infrastructure (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) that powered this application. I also owned Active Directory Exchange deployments for several clinical departments in the hospital and managed DNS and marketing websites (including several additional LAMP deployments) for several clinical departments in the hospital.
