About Evan Fetherolf
I’m Evan Fetherolf, a video editor turned A+ certified technician with a passion for tech literacy, self-hosting, and data independence. Technology is a fundamental—and unavoidable—part of our daily lives, and in my career, I strive to help people navigate the oftentimes complicated labyrinth that all this tech creates. Everyone deserves to have tech that not only works but works for them.In my last career as a video editor, I spent a lot of time optimizing my tools and workflows, and I realized that my job was completely dependent on technology; all of our editing, transcoding, file sharing, and communication happened on network-connected computers. It turns out properly working tech is a prerequisite for productivity. So, I taught myself to troubleshoot basic problems, documenting the solutions for quick reference in the future. This turned out to be valuable when other editors on my team ran into technical issues. I could help them troubleshoot, saving the downtime that would result from escalation.I gained a lot of other transferable skills as an editor, too. Communication is vital to day-to-day operations, collaborating with producers, supervisors, and members of my own team, often tempering expectations and sometimes deescalating a situation when someone is frustrated. Problem-solving is also one of the most important parts of editing; rarely is the raw footage perfect, and unexpected legal, copyrighting, and technical issues happen on almost every project. I had to think on my feet every day, drawing on my personal experience to improvise solutions. In my IT career, I look forward not only to helping people navigate their own personal experiences with technology but also to maintaining secure systems and networks that protect users’ data and privacy. I’m excited about the opportunities that new technology brings and can’t wait to support, maintain, and advance those new technologies.

Video Editor
System Administrator
Video Editor
As a video editor, my main responsibility was editing raw footage into quick, concise videos for social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Communication was key in this role–producers would tell me their vision for the end product, and I had to make sure that the goals were clear, and that the producer and I were on the same page creatively. I also had to communicate with other people on my team; supervisors were in charge of scheduling and fulfilling any external dependencies, so keeping them informed of my timeline and any needs was vital. And because a projects usually involved other creative steps after actually making the edit, like color grading and sound mixing, being able to identify and express any potential areas of friction in the technical workflow was important to delivering projects that met clients' creative expectations and deadlines. In this role, I also learned to troubleshoot some basic IT issues; our workflows relied on a robust IT infrastructure of networks and servers, and being able to troubleshoot and fix basic issues with technologies like editing systems, SMB shares, and our remote desktop client increased my productivity significantly. When an issue came up, I often could save time by not having to call IT support, troubleshooting the issues on my own. Whenever I was able to solve an issue I hadn't seen before, I documented it, building my own personal knowledge base. Eventually, I was able to use this documentation to provide support to other editors on my team, saving support calls and increasing their productivity as well. While not actually a customer service role, I still practiced and refined the customer service skills I learned working at the movie theater. I frequently worked with different producers, which meant a wide range of personalities. By recognizing and adapting to these personalities, I managed to keep producers happy, even if I wasn't able to completely meet their expectations.
Assistant Editor
My gateway into Tastemade, I primarily created compilation videos from previously produced material. These compilations served as one of the main sources of programming on Tastemade’s social channels, seeing hundreds of thousands of views across various platforms. I was the first Junior Editor in this role, so I got to create my own workflows that I eventually trained my replacement on when I was promoted to full Editor.A small thing I did in this role that I’m proud of nonetheless was writing a Bash script to automate a tedious part of my workflow. I had a template directory containing a blank project that I had to copy, rename (the project and the directory), and organize into parent directories by date. This was an obvious candidate for automation and saved me a lot of time over the course of this job.In addition to the compilation videos, I eventually supported the other editors by delivering videos for multiple platforms while they began work on new projects. This involved substantial communication with the producers and editors, while also requiring a degree of autonomy on my part. Ultimately, I gained valuable skills and practice that led to my promotion to full Editor.

Being a small operation of only a few employees, I really had the opportunity for a lot of responsibility in this position.
