Profile bio

About Evan Kallenberg

I get excited about all levels of research (from the design/assembly of instrumentation to data analysis). I greatly enjoy the design process and love being challenged. Currently, my specific interests for research involve plasma physics, nuclear engineering, and experimental physics. However, I am always open to exploring new fields of STEM. In recent years, I have been granted a few teaching and supervising opportunities. As I have greatly enjoyed these experiences, I intend to pursue more of these positions in the future. I find the process of adjusting my teaching method to best fit each student's way of learning very fascinating.

Oct 2019 - May 2022

Mathematics Teacher

San Diego, California, United States

Jun 2021 - Aug 2021

Junior Physicist

Vancouver, Canada Area

Currently, I am continuing the design of a new Beta NMR spectrometer for biological applications at TRIUMF. This includes the design/assembly of a differential pumping system to sustain the liquid water target, simulations in Opera3D and COMSOL to achieve optimized beam transmission, and testing of the solid state detectors used for detection of the emitted electrons. Another part of my role on this project includes supervising a recent award winner of the Young Engineers and Scientists (YES!) Fellowship. This fellowship is intended to motivate recent secondary school graduates to pursue careers in research by exposing them to advanced laboratory environments. So far, I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to teach this highly motivated student about various components of our project. I am also involved in another project at TRIUMF: the electromagnetic mass analyzer (EMMA) which is used for measuring the cross sections of various nuclear reactions crucial for understanding stellar nucleosynthesis. Currently, I am implementing several calculation tools on to a web interface which can be accessed while delivering beam to the EMMA instrument.

Jun 2019 - Jun 2020

Teaching Assistant

Vancouver, Canada Area

Systematic Program Design (Computer Science 110)While working as a teaching assistant for the Computer Science Department at UBC, I ran labs of 30 students three times a week to teach first year students the fundamentals of program design. Concepts covered included the implementation of data structures (such as graphs and binary trees) and writing recursive algorithms to solve problems.

Jan 2019 - Apr 2019

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Würzburg Area, Germany

During my 4 month position at the University of Wurzburg, I worked on the fabrication and measurement of two-dimensional electronic systems to investigate various intrinsic properties of semiconductors/semimetals. My work contributed to the study of various transport phenomena present in topological insulators. Finally, I started to work on the fabrication/testing of a new spintronic device which utilizes several Hall effects apparent in HgTe quantum wells.

May 2018 - Sep 2018

Undergraduate Researcher

Vancouver, Canada Area

While working at TRIUMF, I started the design of a new Beta NMR spectrometer used to study protein structure and protein dynamics in aqueous solutions. My primary focus was the design of the a novel vacuum system which can sustain liquid water targets while openly connected to TRIUMF's beamline. I used Molflow+ (a Monte Carlo simulation) to simulate the vacuum system of the spectrometer in order to optimize the new design. I also used COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate how liquid water could be maintained inside the central regions of the spectrometer. Furthermore, I extensively developed my design skills using SolidWorks. Using these skills, I designed a new type of valve which can sustain large pressure gradients while maintaining optimum beam transmission. I carried out this process from start to finish including the initial design, assisting the production of the designs with the machine shop technicians, and testing the final productions in the lab.
