Triton Software Engineering (TSE) is a UCSD student organization creating web apps and services for nonprofit organizations worldwide pro bono. Dedicated teams of designers, software developers, and project managers work together to create websites and apps for different nonprofit clients. Between 2020 and 2022, the 70+ strong organization collaborated with more than six nonprofit organizations, including The League of Amazing Programmers, Feeding San Diego, and Make-A-Wish.As the Vice President of Design of TSE during the 2021 to 2022 school year, I helped our 11 designers successfully carry out their projects and collaborate smoothly with fellow designers, developers, and project managers. During our weekly meetings, I enabled our designers to stay in the loop with each other’s projects and provide feedback for each other’s work. When there were difficulties in communication and roadblocks in the project, I worked with relevant project teams and their members, as well as board members across the organization, to resolve the issue. As our organization transitioned from a waterfall framework to an agile one, I repeatedly emphasized the importance of designers, given that they talked the most with clients and understood their needs the best. I successfully advocated for the inclusion of designers in the complete project planning process. From the beginning, they would work with the project manager to communicate expectations with the client and be the chief touchpoint throughout the project cycles.I also communicated to board members and our design team the importance of unifying our design process across client projects to make our workflow more efficient, uniform, and professional. I gathered designers and developers to create a design system that could allow everyone to use a standard set of components, animations, flows, and interactions, simplifying our development process and solidifying a Triton Software Engineering brand identity.
