Created through a bequest from William M. Bristol, Jr. ('17), the Bristol Fellowship is a $25,000 fellowship awarded to 1 or 2 graduating seniors at Hamilton College to encourage self-discovery by pursuing a project of their own design outside the United States for a whole calendar year. I was Hamilton College's 21st Bristol Fellowship.For my project, I traveled to four countries – Finland, Japan, India, and Uganda – to study the architecture of schools and classrooms and to examine how these spaces contribute positively or negatively to student learning. I learned extensively about public education systems in each of these countries, teaching and pedagogy, as well as learning environment design.• Finland: Studied 7 public schools chosen by the Museum of Finnish Architecture for their exemplary design• Japan: Interned at Tezuka Architects to study their world renowned elementary school, Fuji Kindergarten• India: Studied BaLA school design, created by architect, Kabir Vajpeyi, and Hunar Ghar school, managed by the UK NGO, Educate for Life• Uganda: Worked at Building Tomorrow, an NGO dedicated to constructing new school infrastructure in rural areas of Uganda. Collaborated with organization's fellowship program to improve administration of partner schools.
